I... read more had planned to do the tour whilst my husband was out scuba diving but unfortunately due to a family emergency, the tour had to be cancelled. I was initially devastated, but so relieved that Peter could fit not just me, but ALSO my husband in the next day's tour! So not only did I still get to go, but my husband could also come! I'm so glad we both got to enjoy the experience. I knew the tour was going to be an absolute hoot when we discovered that about 50% of the travellers on the bus were either Julie or Steven! (I am Julie and my husband is Steven). Yes, that's right, there were 2 Stevens and 3 Julies! Oooh there were so many Julie and Steven jokes! We had many laughs on the bus, but we also learnt so many fascinating facts about beautiful Lord Howe, and fell more and more in love with the island. Peter is an absolute fountain of knowledge when it comes to Lord Howe, and I'm pretty sure if Peter doesn't know it, then nobody does! As others have said, I'd definitely recommend doing this tour at the beginning of your stay, as it gives you a great overview, along with many ideas of what you might want to consider doing during your visit. You pay for the tour at the end, and Peter stops by his house where there is wifi for those wanting to pay via credit card. This tour is definitely one worth doing! Understanding how a new place (new to me) works, is very important to me.... read more The reasons why it is so expensive. How have the islanders survived there for so long, with such isolation. The ordering of groceries 2 weeks in advance...what will you need? Will it even be on the ship? Will the ship be able to come?

How to deal with waste? How to get power? Petrol?

This gave me a great basis to understand, lots about the island and it's people and a great appreciation for how friendly, down to earth and generous everyone is.

Despite being a paradise, I think it would be not the easiest life (that all tourists would think it is) and to understand that straight up, was a gift.

  Peter was an exceptionally knowledgeable, flexible and amenable host for a 3.5hr tour of the island. The small group made for a quite personal experience with Peter fielding... read more many varied questions across a great span of island living topics as the tour poked its way into every interesting nook and cranny that can be approached by mini-bus. Flora, fauna, environmental management, history, health, governance and administration; no topic was untouched by either the commentary or the breadth of Peter’s knowledge in response to questions. This tour was a wonderful way to get the lay of the land and absorb the diversity of all facets of Lord Howe Island life.

The tour encompasses the whole length of the island with stops along the way.... read more The weather station was a highlight - timed exactly to see the weather balloon released, as was the Waste Management Facility and information about their recycling. A photo stop at Mt Lidgbird and Mt Gower, information about every bird that we saw and the controversy over the recent eradication of rodents was all a part of Peter's interesting commentary. With a pocket history of the island, an introduction to local customs, some gossip, a couple of funny "dad jokes" the tour was completed with a stop at Peter's and Janine's gracious home for some wonderful morning tea or coffee. Janine's muffins are something to really look forward to.
